Newsletter – April 2011
I’d like to share some news, reviews videos and music with you all.
The two albums I released late last year have enjoyed a great reception around.
These two albums are The Great Fine Line with the group Tierra de Nadie in NY featuring Ray Anderson, Dan Blake, Mark Helias, Pheeroan akLaff and Satoshi Takeishi, released with Clean Feed Records, and Resistencias the third with my Cuarteto in Colombia which has consisted (for about 6 years) of drummer Jorge Sepulveda, bassist Juan Manuel Toro and percussionist Juan David Castaño released with La Distritofonica.
On the jazz magazine Downbeat, Peter Margasak wrote a really nice review of both albums.
Other reviews of The Great Fine Line: On the site Point of Departure appeared a really detailed article written by Troy Collins. The first review in English appeared on the blog JazzWrap by Stephan Moore.
Other reviews of Resistencias: On the British blog The Jazz Mann, Tim Owen wrote a generous article about this latest album with my Cuarteto. On the New York City Jazz Record (former All About Jazz NY) appeared a review under “Global Unity”, a column that focus on music from one country, this time featuring Colombia. Again on the blog JazzWrap, Stephan Moore was the first to write in English about this album.
I will have a couple of performances in New York City with Tierra de Nadie, on April 28th at DROM in sextet configuration with everyone who recorded on the album (Ray Anderson, Dan Blake, Mark Helias, Pheeroan akLaff, Satoshi Takeishi and myself). You can hear a sample of a track from the CD at Drom’s website in the “jukebox”. We will co-bill the concert with great Colombian singer Lucía Pulido in duo with bassist Stomu Takeishi.
And on May 1st, we will present the group in quintet version (same personnel except Satoshi) at Cornelia Street Cafe.
In the meantime, here is a clip from our CD release concert last November at Joe’s Pub in NYC:
To listen to, I also want to share the webiste of the venue *matik-maik*, in Bogotá, which has been an important space dedicated to creative music in Colombia for the last three years. On this site you can hear concerts that have been recorded at the space (Some shows of mine there: #32 Aleatorio session 8 [Jorge Sepúlveda, Mario Galeano, Ricardo Gallo], #42 Gallo/Sepúlveda-Experimental, #146 Ricardo Gallo Cuarteto, #151 Piano solo, among others and many more from other artists.)
Lastly, in La Distritofonica‘s website, a collective of musicians in Bogotá you can listen to all the CDs from the collective (the three with my Cuarteto are in this catalog which now consist of 26 titles).
Thanks for reading and for listening,
